I was inspired by Charlotte’s posts to try this. If you don’t follow Charlotte, I highly recommend you do! She shares a lot of queer lit and is half of the team over at Reads Rainbow (which you should ALSO follow).
I’ve tried several TBR memes before, but I like the idea of ranking books with a numerical system! This first post is just going to be playing around a bit. Charlotte rates books based on how motivated she is to read it (1-5) multiplied by how interested she is in the premise (1-5).
I plan to start by using a similar system: priority (1-5) + interest in blurb (1-5) + average friend rating on GR (1-5) / 3. I’ll check out the final result and make my decision from there. I’m not going to make any hard rules, but my guess is a score of 3+ is good enough to stay. Very high ratings will get put on my tbr asap shelf. If none of my friends have rated the book, then I’ll exclude the friends’ ratings and only divide by 2.
- My Life with Bob
- Priority, 3. Interest, 4. Friends’ Ratings, n/a.
- Score: 3.5, keep.
- Seven Tears at High Tide
- Priority, 1. Interest, 3. Friends’ Ratings, 4.
- Score: 2.67, remove.
- Mark Z. Danielewski’s House of Leaves

- Score: 2.5, remove.
- Bluets

- Ariel
- Priority, 2. Interest, 3. Friends’ Ratings, 3.17.

TBR at Start of Series: 1282 (lolll help me)
TBR Today: 1429
TBR Now: 1418
I removed eleven books today! That’s 55% of the books I looked at. I also added one to my TBR ASAP shelf, which means I should read it in the next year or so (I also own it, so). I’m really excited that I’ve started doing this, since it’s clear there are so many books I’m no longer interested in that are bogging down my TBR. Let me know if any of you decide to try Charlotte’s reorganizing as well, I’d like to see how it works for others. 🙂
I have My Life with Bob on my list too, it sounds like an interesting premise! I didn’t particularly care for Bluets, although other people really love it. I loved her book The Red Parts, though, and I’ve heard her others are amazing too. Bluets is just very odd and never quite came together for me. Shrill was really good too! Excited to hear what you think of that one.

Bluets seems to have very mixed opinions from friends of mine so it makes me nervous to jump straight into it! I def want to try some of her other stuff though. 🙂

She’s a very unique and incredibly talented writer, absolutely worth trying. But yeah I don’t think Bluets is the place to start. It seems like a love it or hate it situation.

I want to read some Maggie Nelson as well, though I don’t think I’ll start with Bluets either. I liked I’ll Give You the Sun but thought it was way overhyped. And I hope you like ‘Salem’s Lot when you get to it! I really enjoyed that one, but it’s been so long now that I hardly remember any details; I liked it enough that I’ll want to reread it though! Also I’d love to see your thoughts on Shrill, that’s been on my TBR for ages!

I love this system! I might have to try this out too, my Goodreads TBR is massive and makes me rather anxious to look at lol. Also I second starting out with The Red Parts – I devoured it in the course of an afternoon. It’s incredible.

Oof, that’s what’s pushed me to do this as well! The sheer size of my TBR is terrifying to me, and it’s fun to look back on stuff I had added so long ago. I’m def gonna look into The Red Parts, thank you! 🙂
