I haven’t done this meme since 2019 but I thought it would be fun to try it out again!
What you have to do is: randomise your read shelf on goodreads, choose first 3 books & then decide which one and why you want to burn, to rewrite & to reread.
Burn:Braised Pork, I feel so bad but I just didn’t ‘get’ it. Rewrite:Ancillary Justice, this was a little bit of a struggle for me and I think I could love it with some adjustments. Reread: Everless. Hear me out! I gave this 4 stars when I first read it and… think I’d probably like it less now? But couldn’t tell unless I reread it.
Burn:Dangerous Girls, I tagged this as queerbaiting on Goodreads and it’s one of those thrillers where the end is completely out of left field — because the author didn’t give any indication it could go that way. Rewrite: I did not write reviews for either of these books, but I’m going to go with The Lost World? Reread: Because Through the Woods was just so unique that I don’t want to rewrite it.

Wow, we had NO WINNERS. Also it’s been almost [checks notes] 3 years since Round 2, oops. Waking Gods actually made me decide to DNF the entire series. Rebecca was good and I’m glad I read it. Conversations with Friends was SO CLOSE to 5 stars and probably would have been had I been in a better headspace reading it. I had not looked into Human Acts before reading it and it was VERY different from The Vegetarian; good, but not quite my thing. A Girl Like Her was great and I do intend on continuing the series!
Little Weirds. My best friend loved this and I’ve been looking forward to it.
The Obelisk Gate (The Broken Earth Trilogy #2). The Fifth Season obliterated me.
So Sad Today. The Pisces is one of my all-time favorites so I’m excited to see what else Melissa Broder has in store for me. (Milk Fed also could have been on here)

So on Goodreads, you can compare your books to someone else’s books. Essentially, Goodreads will look at the books on both of your shelves and compare them for similarities. I’m not entirely sure how it works, but it’s a general look at how similar your reading is.
So, I thought it would be fun to compare my reading tastes to those of some of my friends to see who I read most similarly to.
So let’s see how much my friends and I actually have in common when it comes to reading!
Well, it’s certainly been a wild year already, so it’s a good a time to post this as any. As with last year, I’m only going to let myself use ONE book for each answer to keep things spicy, and I’m not allowed to reuse answers.
Best book you’ve read so far
In the Dream House by Carmen Maria Machado, which absolutely destroyed me.
Best sequel so far
I’ve read almost entirely standalones this year, but I’d have to say The Adventure Zone: Murder on the Rockport Limited was probably the best of the [checks notes] 3 sequels I’ve read so far this year.
New release you haven’t read but want to
For this, I’m including only those already published (because of the below question) and I’m gonna go with Exciting Times.
Most anticipated release in the second half of 2019
Okay, this one was HARD but I have to go with Survivor Song because, a) I like Paul Tremblay, b) this is set in Massachusetts, and c) it features a rabies-like virus and I have a rabies PHOBIA so I am basically guaranteed to love and/or be forever scarred by this.
Biggest disappointment
I found Frankissstein to be transphobic garbage and a pretty bad reading experience.
Biggest surprise
I did think I’d enjoy The Body Lies, but I had no idea how much it would blow me away.
Favorite new author
Oof, I was torn on this one but ultimately chose Kate Elizabeth Russell because not only did I love her debut, but I also really love her as a person on social media.
I don’t reaaally read happy books, but Rafe was a fun romance.
Favorite book to movie adaptation
I’ve only seen film adaptations that I dislike so far this year, so I’ll go with Season 2 of Castle Rock instead!
Favorite review
I haven’t particularly enjoyed any of my reviews so far this year, but I’ll go with Mr. Mercedes because who doesn’t love a rant review?
Most beautiful book bought/received
Okay I’m going to break my own rule and say the Call Down the Hawk cover I posted above. I preordered a UK edition because I HATED the US cover and think this one is pretty dang nice.

I’ve tried several TBR memes before, but I like the idea of ranking books with a numerical system! This first post is just going to be playing around a bit. Charlotte rates books based on how motivated she is to read it (1-5) multiplied by how interested she is in the premise (1-5).
I plan to start by using a similar system: priority (1-5) + interest in blurb (1-5) + average friend rating on GR (1-5) / 3. I’ll check out the final result and make my decision from there. I’m not going to make any hard rules, but my guess is a score of 3+ is good enough to stay. Very high ratings will get put on my tbr asap shelf. If none of my friends have rated the book, then I’ll use the Goodreads rating instead.

I removed a whopping 10 books today. I also added 1 to my tbr asap shelf. The reason I removed so many more than usual is because I sort of changed how I did my ratings. Before, I had been rating “interest” based on what I thought my personal rating would be if I did read the books. I felt like that wasn’t really a fair indicator of interest, so I’ve decided to think of it in terms of how likely I would be to add the book to my tbr if I saw it for the first time today. There are plenty of books I bet I would rate 3 stars, but also would have no urge to add to my tbr. This seems like a more honest way of looking at things, and makes it easier to remove stuff.
Let me know if any of you decide to try Charlotte’s reorganizing as well, I’d like to see how it works for others. 🙂
