Organizing my TBR VI

I was inspired by Charlotte’s posts to try this. If you don’t follow Charlotte, I highly recommend you do! She shares a lot of queer lit and is half of the team over at Reads Rainbow (which you should ALSO follow).

I’ve tried several TBR memes before, but I like the idea of ranking books with a numerical system! This first post is just going to be playing around a bit. Charlotte rates books based on how motivated she is to read it (1-5) multiplied by how interested she is in the premise (1-5).

I plan to start by using a similar system: priority (1-5) + interest in blurb (1-5) + average friend rating on GR (1-5) / 3. I’ll check out the final result and make my decision from there. I’m not going to make any hard rules, but my guess is a score of 3+ is good enough to stay. Very high ratings will get put on my tbr asap shelf. If none of my friends have rated the book, then I’ll exclude the friends’ ratings and only divide by 2.

I doubled the amount of books I looked at, since I felt like this was going a bit slow. It worked, because I removed eight books today! That’s 40% of the books I looked at. I’m really excited that I’ve started doing this, since it’s clear there are so many books I’m no longer interested in that are bogging down my TBR. Let me know if any of you decide to try Charlotte’s reorganizing as well, I’d like to see how it works for others. 🙂

What’s the last book you marked as ‘read’?

Little House on the Prairie, which I actually read during my youth! I realized when I re-read Little House in the Big Woods recently that I didn’t have the next installation marked as read.

What are you currently reading?

I’m in a mini-slump at the moment (I’ve been ill and have been mostly sleeping or watching mindless TV), so I just have my eARC of the rerelease of Half Way Home by Hugh Howey instead of my usual 2-3 current reads.

What was the last book you marked as TBR?

Dead Meat: Day 1, after seeing Destiny’s review!

What book do you plan to read next?

The Scorpio Races! I’ve had Rachel’s copy for over a year now and am finally getting around to it.

Do you use the star rating system?

Big time! It’s the same one I use here, I just round up for half stars.

Are you doing the 2019 Reading Challenge?

Sort of! I have it set to 52 (1 book a week), because I’ll just obsess and stress myself out if I focus too much on numbers. I’m at 76 right now, so it would be cool to break 100 by the end of the year, but that’s really just a casual stretch goal.

I have a “I Need to Buy a Copy of This” shelf.

I saw that Emily did this and thought it looked fun, so I figured I’d do it as well! Emily went with the year she was born (as several other people have done), so I thought I would too (1992, btw). For fun, I also looked at the years I graduated from both college and high school (although those will not be a part of this post). It was interesting to see which books were published then!

Turns out I’ve read a whopping 13 of the top books published in 1992 — never mind that apparently half of those were Goosebumps books, ha.

This random Polish fantasy is definitely the most obscure-sounding.

I’m going to bypass strangest book cover, as they’re difficult to see in the list and I don’t want to go through them ALL.

    • I would say right now I prefer adult, but I enjoy everything except MG (with exceptions!).

Hi all, it’s been a while since I’ve done a tag! I didn’t realize how on top of my review game I was until just now. So let’s mix it up a bit with this meme Charlotte tagged me in… THREE months ago. Go follow Charlotte btw, she has a great blog!

What book has been on your shelf the longest?

This is a tough one because so many of my books are at my mom’s, but I’m going to guess A Moose for Jessica! It’s literally about a moose who falls in love with a cow named Jessica and it’s a TRUE STORY and I adore it.

What is your current read, your last read, and the book you’ll read next?

My current reads are Rebel Girls and A Girl Is a Half-Formed Thing, the first of which is an ARC and the second of which I’m reading with my Women’s Prize group (except I’m extremely late because they’ve all finished already!). My last read was All the Birds, Singing, which I still haven’t managed to review. Next I’ll probably read Everything I Never Told You (which I was also supposed to read with a friend a little while ago — oops!).

What book did everyone like, but you hated?

The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo. My nemesis. We meet again.

What book do you keep telling yourself you’ll read but probably won’t?

Honestly, I’m trying really hard not to do this anymore! I’ve unhauled lots of books in the hopes that I’ll only keep what I’ll read. That being said, possibly Women Who Run with the Wolves, which I’ve had a physical copy of for 5 years and keep forgetting about.

What book are you saving for retirement?

This is a terrifying question and I don’t understand why I’m being asked it.

Last page: read it first, or wait ’till the end?

I absolutely will NOT read it first. People who do this are so chaotic. I respect them, but I don’t understand them.

Acknowledgement: waste of paper and ink, or interesting aside?

Depends on the acknowledgement. Waste of paper if it’s just a list of names, interesting aside if it actually gives a bit more insight into the writing.

Which book character would you switch places with?

Honestly, not sure I’ve found the perfect one yet!

Do you have a book that reminds you of something specific in your life? (Place, time, person?)

I read the entirety of Mother Night while on a bus to Boston with someone very important to me, so it reminds me of those few hours.

Name a book that you acquired in an interesting way.

I don’t think I’ve acquired any books in “interesting” ways, ha.

Have you ever given a book away for a special reason/to a special person?

Nah, I really only give away books that I don’t want anymore.

Which book has been with you most places?

Probably House of Leaves, because it took sooo long to read!

Any “required reading” you hated in high school that wasn’t so bad two years later?

Hmmm nah, I haven’t reread any required reading unless I enjoyed it.

Used or brand new?

I don’t have much of a preference, but since I don’t buy many books anymore I do prefer to buy new if it’s an author I’d like to support!

Have you ever read a Dan Brown book?

Several. They were enjoyable when I was in high school!

Have you ever seen a movie you liked more than the book?

The Jurassic Park movies are arguably better than the books. The first book comes close to the first movie, but the second movie is better than the second book for sure.

Have you ever read a book that’s made you hungry, cookbooks included?

Pretty much any book that describes good food!

Who is the person whose book advice you’ll always take?

Everyone in the Women’s Prize Squad: Rachel, Naty, Hannah, Emily, Callum, and Steph!

Is there a book out of your comfort zone (e.g., outside your usual reading genre) that you ended up loving?

I actually DNFed Freshwater the first time I read it because I found it so difficult to read, but I ended up loving it the second time around!
